Extra Tooth Comes Out!!

Eric comments that he is the only one of the kids who has never had surgery. Well today he has joined the surgery club!

Going in for a completely different problem, our regular dentist took an x-ray and noticed what looked to be an extra tooth in the front of Eric's mouth. We were referred to an oral surgeon who said that Eric had "a super numerary tooth between 8 & 9" and it would need to be surgically removed. So two weeks later here we are.

Our neighbor came over at 6:30am to watch the other kids while Jared and I went with Eric. The procedure was done at the oral surgeon's office as an out-patient. Eric was just a little bit nervous. Jared went back with him while they got him comfortable on gas and inserted the IV (NOT Eric's favorite part!) The Dr. completely put Eric out for the procedure. It lasted about 35 minutes.

Eric came out with 2 stitches-one between his top two front teeth and the second right behind a neighboring tooth. The Dr. did a great job hiding the incision. I don't think anyone will ever know. Eric is on an antibiotic for 7 days and Motrin and Tylenol for pain.

It was really neat, the Dr. let Eric keep the tooth! We were really surprised at how BIG the tooth was. It looked big enough that it seemed like Eric should have felt it. The Dr. said it was a good thing we took it out before it caused problems. Unfortunately, the tooth has already been "misplaced" but we are keeping our eyes out for it!

Congrats Eric!! You were a great patient on your first surgery!!
